Winsome Apryle Yvonne Nunes (nee Groves) also known as "Shirley" of Acworth, GA and Kingston, Jamaica was born on January 16th, 1936 and passed away on Sunday, July 7th, 2013. A memorial service will be held at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta on Saturday, July 20th at 2pm, with Father Larry Williams of St. Teresa’s Episcopalian Church officiating. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home at 1:00pm, immediately preceding the service.
Winsome was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald "Bossie" Groves (who is credited with dubbing her Shirley after the Shirley Temple curls she always sported as a young child), Mae Groves and one brother, Winston "Nixie" Groves. Winsome's brother, Bobby Spence, and sisters Sonja Allen, Heather Hobson and Peggy Russell are coordinating a memorial service in Jamaica in her honor for all the loved ones close to home.
Born in Williamsfield, Jamaica, Winsome was an adventurous soul. She left her island home at an early age to pursue career opportunities in the UK and New York. While working with the Jamaican Consulate in New York City, she married Frederick Nunes formerly of Port Antonio and Kingston, Jamaica and bore two children. The family returned to Jamaica, and while raising her children Winsome successfully earned a Bachelor’s of Arts and a Diploma in Management studies from UWI. She later had much success and enjoyment working as the Personnel Director of I.C.W.I (Insurance Company of the West Indies) and is fondly remembered by those who worked with her there.
Always loyal to family first, Winsome moved with her family to Barbados, then to the US to be near her children in their college years. Everywhere she went she became known and popular as "Auntie Winsome" among her children's friends. Once they had graduated & were building their own lives she chose to return to Jamaica and be near her siblings again. As her health began to fail, Winsome was cared for by her sisters, and eventually moved to Georgia to be cared for by her son’s family.
Along with her surviving siblings; Bobby Spence, Jennifer Groves, Sonja Allen, Clive and Heather Hobson, Peggy Russell and Laurie and Tonette Groves, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, Winsome leaves behind children - son Malcolm and daughter Miwa, daughter-in-law Natalie and son-in-law Jemal and grandchildren Lauren, Lesley and Malcolm.
In lieu of gifts, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Winsome Nunes Fund for Alzheimer's Research
