Bill, born in Cairo, Georgia, was the son of the late William Archie Northington, Sr. and Wilba Frances Garner Northington. Growing up in Montgomery, Alabama, he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and 4 years later, graduated from Auburn University with a BA Degree in Business Administration in 1961. While at Auburn he was in the Naval ROTC Scholarship Program.

After graduation, Bill married Winnie Faye Smith, and they remained happily married for almost 62 years. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and served his country approximately 4 years. During his Navy days in 1962, his first child, Dana, was born. In 1965 Bill received an honorable discharge from the Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. After service in the Navy, Bill became a real estate appraiser in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1968 his second child, Carey, was born and in 1970 his 3rd child, Stephen, was born.

In 1972 Bill and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia to become Chief Appraiser with Atlanta Federal Savings and Loan, which later became Georgia Federal Bank, and remained with the Bank for over 20 years. Also in 1972 Bill was professionally designated as an MAI (Member Appraisal Institute) within the organization of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He retained this professional designation throughout his appraisal career. Bill was active in the Atlanta Chapter of the Organization and served in many official capacities, including president and member of the Board of Directors. He eventually retired from Georgia Federal Bank, private practice, and as an MAI.

Bill will be remembered most by his family and friends as someone who loved his family, his God, was honest, hard-working, disciplined, principled and who came home every night. He loved the Navy, his country, playing tennis, the outdoors and the churches where he served; he was a “Southern Gentleman”; he especially enjoyed fishing and deer hunting on his property in Abbeville, Alabama. Bill also valued spending time with his family whether it was on an annual vacation to Hilton Head Island, SC or boating on Allatoona Lake in GA.

Bill was active in a number of Baptist churches and was last most active at Kennesaw First Baptist Church in Kennesaw, Georgia. Bill has been on the deacon board, finance committee, and faithfully taught Sunday School in the Baptist Church for approximately 40 years.

Bill is survived by his wife, Winnie Faye Smith Northington of Woodstock, Georgia; his children, Dana E. Kumpf (Craig) of Marietta, Georgia; William Carey Northington (Andrea) of Xenia, Ohio; and Stephen D. Northington (Tracey) of Kennesaw, Georgia. His grandchildren include Austin Kumpf, Alec Kumpf, Hannah Bundy (Josh), Gracie Northington, Katie Northington, Emma Northington, Ivey Jones (John), and Evan Northington. Bill is survived by his sister, Betty Fuller of Montgomery, Alabama, and his brother, Charles Northington of Marietta, Georgia.
