Walter Tarnopilsky, 86, of Marietta, GA, passed away on January 29, 2024.
Born on January 6, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Walter moved to Montreal, Quebec, in elementary school, where he lived until graduating from high school. In 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising through the ranks to Major over the course of 20 years. He married Jessica Kremin on July 15, 1967.
During his military career, Walter earned degrees in engineering and mathematics, graduating from the University of Mississippi and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He served one tour in Vietnam as a communications specialist.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Walter began a civilian career with RCA, followed by a position at the Mitre Corporation in Danvers, Massachusetts. He lived in Massachusetts from 1981 until 2003, when he retired and moved to Acworth, GA, to be closer to his daughter, Larissa, and her family.
In his retirement, Walter enjoyed playing basketball in the Senior Olympics and golf. He also developed a passion for painting, where he applied his meticulous attention to detail and keen sense of order to create his artwork.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Jessica Tarnopilsky, in 2024. He is survived by his daughter, Larissa Zitzmann of Marietta, GA; his grandchildren, Katarina Zitzmann and Leopold Zitzmann of Kennesaw, GA; his nephews, Peter, John, and Stephen Burega; and his sisters, Nadia Tomiuk and Maryann Conover, along with their extended families. He is also survived by his godson, Anthony Buckalew.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Wednesday, February 5th from 3:00 pm-4:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home. Burial will be on Thursday, February 6th at Georgia National Cemetery.
