Virginia Shelton Chappell was born in Cartersville, Georgia, June 13, 1926, to Julia Bell Shelton and Walter Davis Shelton, the youngest of eight children.
Virginia's family is descended from the French Huguenot Chastain family, who left France to settle in Virginia in quest of religious freedom. A long line of Christian church members and Baptist ministers followed throughout the generations. "Ginny" was raised in a devout Christian family who helped to found The Gilmer Street Baptist Church in Cartersville.
During World War II, Virginia met her husband of over 50 years, Wallace Lee Chappell (b. 30 November, 1924--d. 17 January, 2000) in Washington, D.C., where she worked at The Pentagon until they married in 1947. In the early 1950's, Virginia and Wallace settled in the Atlanta area. During their decades as members of the Sandtown Church, both "Ginny" and Wallace were able to practice their strong Christian faith. Together, they spent many hours volunteering with Sandtown Baptist Church. Wallace worked with the youth of the church and Virginia
managed Sandtown Church Daycare.
As a founding member of Decision Point Ministries, Virginia loved her Church and Church family. In honor of her ministry service at the church location the church's fellowship hall was named for her in a formal ceremony on October 23, 2016. Although she has no children of her own, "Aunt Ginny" is adored by eight nieces and nephews and ten grand-nieces and nephews, all raised in the Christian Church. One of her nephews and a great-nephew carry on the family tradition as Baptist ministers in northern Georgia.
Virginia "Ginny" Chappell transitioned peacefully to the presence of the Lord Monday night April 24, 2023. God blessed the world with her presence for over 96 years. "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." Psalm 116:15 KJV
