Thomas Russell Wood was born October 3, 1965, and passed on February 5, 2023, after a four-week battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.
Russell was born in Atlanta, Georgia, graduated from McEachern High School and served with the Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services for almost 30 years. He was a lieutenant and worked in training and mentoring other firefighters. Russell loved the Lord, and he was an active member of Powder Springs First United Methodist Church where he sang tenor in the choir, served as Missions Chairperson, helped with the Preschool, cooked for the Chicken-Q & women’s events, and studied with the men’s Bible study group. Russell’s interests were vast- he loved to sing, fish, hunt, travel, tell stories, eat, and cook.
He was a devoted family man who always took great care of his ‘girls’- his mama Gladys, his older sister Kim, his daughters Abby and Maddie, his mother-in-love Betty, and his wife of 34 years, Stacey. He was so proud of his beautiful daughters and sons-in-love. He was known as “Pops” to his amazing grandchildren. Russell never met a stranger; he saw everyone as a friend that he hadn’t met yet. He always looked for ways to serve others and make them feel loved and valuable.
He was predeceased by his father, Virlyn Wood. Surviving members of his family include his mother, Gladys Wood, his sister, Kim Norton (Brian), his daughters, Abby Reid (Matt) and Madeline Platt (Bob), his grandchildren, Winnie Beth, Annaclaire, Barrett, Ripley, and five nephews and a niece, and his wife, Stacey Wood. He is also survived by his close friends, Doug Cantrell, Tommy Steed, and Richard Steed, members of his church family, his hunting buddies, his firemen brothers, and countless other friends.
Visitation will be held at West Cobb Funeral home on Friday, Feb. 10th, 2-4 & 6-8. A memorial service will be held at Powder Springs First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 11th at 12:00. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Powder Springs First United Methodist Church.
