UPDATED...Thomas Colen Mason, Jr., “Tommy”, 73, of the Atlanta, Georgia area, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
Tommy was born in Savannah, GA on August 16, 1946. Was the son of the late CDR. Thomas C. Mason (USN Ret.) and Cecile M. Mason. Most of his ancestral family came from Georgia.
Maddie, his beloved wife, predeceased Tommy several years ago. They were owners of several Golden Retriever dogs, who were very special to Tommy.
A graduate of Bishop England High School in Charleston, SC, Tommy earned a BA degree in Studio Art (painting concentration) at the College of Charleston. He continued on to earn a Master of Education Degree (elementary school concentration), with a combined 3.4GPA, also at the College of Charleston. Subsequently, Tommy earned Art Teacher certification, and over 52 graduate credits in visual art and art education courses.
During his career, Tommy served numerous young public school Art students in both South Carolina and New York. His long Art teaching career started in a couple of Charleston County elementary schools, where he taught for some 17 years. In addition, he taught Art in different elementary schools in New York state.
A gifted visual artist, Tommy was also an athlete. He played semi-pro baseball and football in Charleston. He also loved to write fiction, knew about all there is about geography, loved classical music, and was very much a naturalist.
Tommy is survived by his sister Anna Carlson and her husband Jared, his brother Walter and his wife Grace, and his brother Marion Mason and his wife Beth. Additionally, Tommy, has eight nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Nativity, Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday, October 25, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. S. Thomas Kingsley. Donations can be made to the Nativity Capital Campaign in Tommy’s name.
