Susan Hester Bivins, 72, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on October 28, 2022 from complications related to Type 1 Diabetes at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice Care.
The funeral service will be held at West Cobb Funeral Home, on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Visitation will be from 11:00am-1:00pm, funeral to follow.
Susan was born in Cairo, Georgia on February 6, 1950, and grew up in Marietta, Georgia. She was a 1968 graduate of Marietta High School. Susan later attended the University of Georgia, and she loved UGA football. She and her husband, Sonny, were longtime season ticket holders. As her husband likes to say, she was more of a "season tailgate holder" since she enjoyed those festivities more than the football games.
In 1971 Susan married her highschool sweetheart, Sonny Bivins. According to Sonny it was more like a "Beauty and the Beast" or "Prince and the Pauper" kind of love story, but anyone who knew them knew they were the perfect pair. They would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in December. Sonny will never forget the day he met Susan, 57 years ago. He remembers seeing her across the hallway in High School and asking a friend "who is that girl?" and his friend responded laughing, "Are you serious, that's Susan Hester, and she is way out of your league" He likes to say he married up since the very beginning.
Sonny and Susan were delighted to later welcome their daughter, Kimberly Bivins Sconiers, into their world. Kim and her husband John blessed Susan with two amazing granddaughters, Camryn and Avery Sconiers. The "grandgirls" were the absolute apple of Susan's eye. She loved them more than words could ever say.
Susan had a passion for painting, thrifting, cruising, and decorating. The only thing that Susan enjoyed more than her 10-themed Christmas trees and getting ready for the holidays was any activity that involved her family. Her special Santa decor even got her home featured in the Marietta Daily Journal. She had a unique eye for decorating and was everyone's go-to on where to find the perfect piece for their homes. She would spend hours at antique malls and estate sales just to see what she could find. Susan leaves behind a legacy of paintings and beautiful artwork. Susan was an incredible artist. One of Susan's favorite pastimes was going on cruises. She and Sonny went on more than 50 cruises, most of which were given to them after Susan's many hours at the slot machines.
For many years Susan and Sonny were members of First United Methodist Church of Marietta and later enjoyed attending North Metro Church with their daughter and granddaughters.
Susan is predeceased in death by her parents, David and Emma Ruth Hester, and her brother David "Clay" Hester, Jr. She leaves behind her loving husband, Sonny Bivins, her daughter Kim (John) Sconiers, her two granddaughters, Camryn and Avery Sconiers, sister Prisilla (John) Ayers, nephew David Braden, nieces, Jennifer Braden Johnson and Lauren Parker, as well as her God Daughter, Colleen Purdy Christian, and many great nephews and nieces.
Our heartfelt gratitude to the Wellstar Tranquility Hospice care team for all of their sincere and compassionate care during such a difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Association in honor of Susan.
