After several months of illness, Roy Bartlett McBride peacefully went to be with Jesus in the early morning on April 13, 2024. Roy was born in Lyons, Georgia and grew up on a farm in Soperton, Georgia. He loved being with his sister and 5 brothers on the farm. He completed the seventh grade and later went into the army where he received an honorable discharge after serving his four years as a Private First Class. He talked about his time in Germany in the army and how much he loved the countryside. He learned the trade of a machinist in the army, and upon discharge he worked for RCA Truck Lines in Atlanta as a truck mechanic until he retired. He met his wife Jean through a friend, and they became pen pals while he was in the service. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary September 4, 2023.
Roy and Jean were charter members of St. Luke UMC in Mableton for over 40 years and later joined McEachern Memorial UMC where they were very active in the Searchlights SS Class and Roy was involved in the Car Care Ministry. He loved his church family.
Roy is survived by his wife Jean, son Jeff McBride (Sheila), daughter, Laurie Newman (Randy), grandchildren Travis Newman, Adam Newman (Emme), Elana Newman, Elizabeth Crowder Farr (Chris), two great grandchildren, Malcolm Crowder (Destiny), Madison Farr, brother Gene McBride (Carlene) and many nieces and nephews.
Roy is preceded in death by his father Bartow McBride, mother Vera Holton McBride, brother George McBride (surviving spouse Nell), sister Dorothy McBride Brady (GW), brother Irvin McBride (Louise), brother Troy McBride (surviving spouse Barbara), grandchildren Richard Crowder and Kelly Crowder Davis (Toby).
A Celebration of Life is planned at West Cobb Funeral Home, 2480 Macland Road, Marietta, GA 30064 on Thursday, April 18th at 11:00am. Visitation is Wednesday, April 17th from 5:00-7:00pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory.
