Robert Wilburn James, 91, affectionately known as "Whitey," passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, in Marietta, Georgia, after an extended battle with the complications of dementia. Born on December 6, 1933, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Robert lived a life marked by dedication to his family, career, and passions.
Robert had a distinguished career that spanned over 40 years at Huntington Alloys, a division of the International Nickel Company based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He held the esteemed position of Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing before retiring and moving to St. Augustine, Florida. His career took him and his family across the United States and even to Japan, where they created cherished memories together.
Educated at Wyomissing High School and later graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering in 1955, Robert exhibited a strong commitment to learning and personal growth. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958, stationed at USAG Ansbach in Bavaria, Germany, where he earned a Good Conduct medal and became an expert marksman with both the pistol and rifle.
Robert was devoted to his children and grandchildren, often holding "Grandma & Grandpa" camp on the picturesque beaches of St. Augustine. He loved teaching his grandchildren how to drive his pickup truck, eager to let them see over the steering wheel while sitting on his lap—a testament to his cherished role as a nurturing grandparent.
With a warm sense of humor and a quick laugh, Robert's personality endeared him to many. He found joy in running, which began in his 40s while living in Japan, and later transitioned into a love for racquetball, a sport he continued to enjoy well into his early 70s. A lifelong dream came true after retirement when he obtained his private pilot's license, allowing him to take to the skies.
Robert leaves behind a loving family that includes his son Glenn and ex-daughter-in-law Betsy James; his daughter Tracey and son-in-law Donnie Bain; and his daughter Barbara and son-in-law Rod Kinter. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Kyle and Sydney, Hannah, Jamie and Elizabeth, and Robyn; alongside his cherished great-grandson Ritson and great-granddaughters Emma and Molly.
He was preceded in death by his father Morris Wilburn James, his mother Grace Evelyn James (nee Groff), his sister Evelyn, and his former wife Dorothy Suzanne James. He is also reunited in spirit with his second wife, Helen Brandt James.
Robert Wilburn James will be remembered not only for his successful career and hobbies but more profoundly for the love and joy he spread amongst family and friends throughout his remarkable life. His legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation to ASPCA.org in his name.
