Robert B. “Bob” Gillis, age 76, of Marietta passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2015. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, February 25 at West Cobb Funeral Home with the Reverend Bruce Hamrick and Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment will follow at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta.
Mr. Gillis is preceded in death by his parents, John Royalty and Thelma Thurston Gillis; brother, Dr. Donald W. Gillis (Jeanette) of Fairfield, Ohio; and sister, Lucille Wolfe of Sebring, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Myers Gillis; children, Dr. Leslie Myers Gillis of Dallas, GA, and Robert Bruce Gillis, Jr. of Acworth, GA; and beloved nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gillis was born in Lexington, Kentucky on January 4, 1939. Mr. Gillis graduated from Georgetown University in Georgetown, KY with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a minor in music. He was employed by Equitable Life where he was a Certified Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant. Mr. Gillis was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served the community by working with Junior Achievement in Lexington, Kentucky, and assisting the Boy Scouts of America as a summer camp worker in Lexington, KY and as a scout leader for Troop 317 in Smyrna, GA for many years.
Mr. Gillis’s home church in Kentucky was Grace Baptist Church in Lexington where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Later, Mr. Gillis became a longtime member, deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and music leader at Norton Park Baptist Church in Smyrna, GA. He joined Roswell Street Baptist Church and served there as a deacon children’s Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed family gatherings, reading, music, movies, scouting, and traveling to many parts of the world. Mr. Gillis was an unassuming servant who supported and helped innumerable people in quiet ways. Above all, Mr. Gillis was a strong Christian man and a devoted husband and father.
