Richard Frederick Smith, age 76, of Powder Springs, GA passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016. Memorial Services will be held 3pm Wednesday, May 25th at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta. The family will receive friends from 1pm until 3pm prior to the service.
A native of Rockdale and Mecca, Indiana, Mr. Smith moved to Georgia in 1972, and to Powder Springs in 1989.
He worked as a general contractor, and retired from Ruby Collins, Inc. after a career spanning from 1964 to 1999, with a total of 35 years in the construction industry. New management was provided when Richard F. Smith was appointed as President of the Company. Significant events took place over the next few years, and in 1987 all administrative and accounting functions of Ruby Construction Company, Inc. were moved to Smyrna, Georgia. With the exception of a small amount of punch list work, all Ruby Construction Company, Inc. and the remaining subsidiaries projects were completed. Soon the parent company Ruby Construction Company, Inc. was simply a holding company and due to the success of Ruby-Collins, Inc. it was the sole surviving company in the Ruby family. Through Richard F. Smith’s leadership, hard work, and tenacity he turned Ruby-Collins, Inc. into one of the most well respected construction companies in the Southeast United States, with a volume in some years exceeding thirty million dollars in construction work.
Mr. Smith served in the National Guard for 4 years, he loved playing golf, and was a former member of the Atlanta Athletic Club.
