He was born to Render Waddell and Bertha Tucker Matthews on Lawrence Street in Marietta, GA in 1923. Shortly after he was born the family moved to Douglas, GA, where Mickey was raised. The youngest of 7 children, he went to work at Coffee County Creamery at age 13 to help support his family. In early 1941 he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Panama Canal Zone and aboard a fleet oiler in the Atlantic. In February 1945 he married Charlotte Law of Middlebrook, VA, a welder in the Norfolk shipyard. In January 1946 another sailor introduced Mickey to Jesus Christ, and his life was forever changed.
After serving in the Navy, Mickey and Charlotte relocated to Albany, GA before finally moving to Marietta in 1952 to work at Lockheed. He spent the next 34 years with Lockheed as a machinist and a training specialist before retiring in 1986. Mickey was an active member of Roswell Street Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School to children, singles, and senior men. He also conducted a lunchtime Bible study at work for many years, and blessed many lives along the way.
When Charlotte went to Heaven in 1986, Mickey spent rest of his life residing with his daughter, Lee Ann. In his retirement years they enjoyed traveling together on many mission trips as well as vacations all over the world. In 1991, he began a long and beloved friendship with a widow lady from church, Katherine Ayer. Their sweet friendship was a blessing to both their lives until she died in 2014.
