Mayme Louise Brumskine, teacher, budget analyst, and beloved mother and grandmother, has been called home, from labor to rest. This sad event occurred at 8:40 a.m. on November 8, 2018, at the Governors Glen Assisted Living Facility in Forest Park, Georgia.
Born of the union of Grand Bassa County Senator, the Rev. Walker P.L. Brumskine and Margaret R.E. White Brumskine, on March 5, 1943, Mayme Brumskine was the seventh of eight children. Her parents and her siblings (Hannibal, Pauline, Philip, Winifred, Walter, Cornelia and Mayme’s twin brother) have predeceased her.
Mayme attended the Bromley Girls’ Mission School in Virginia, Liberia. Later, she boarded at the Methodist Girls’ Hostel while attending the College of West Africa (CWA). At CWA, Mayme was a prominent member of both the girls’ basketball and volleyball teams. Some of Mayme’s classmates were Annette Baker, Anna Cooper, Charles (Cha Cha) Dennis, Loseni Dunzo, Charles Minor, Danielette Norman, J. Jenkins Mends-Cole, and Christine Tolbert. Following her graduation from the College of West Africa in 1962, Mayme matriculated to Cuttington College. After earning her B.A. in education, she worked as the Registrar under the College President, Dr. Christian E. Baker. She served in this capacity until 1973.
Mayme married Harold Corbin in 1974 at the United Methodist Church in Upper Buchanan. Though their marriage was dissolved in 1976, they remained lifelong friends. Mayme then began a decades-long tenure as Budget Analyst in the Budget Bureau of the Liberian Government. It was in this capacity that she was offered an opportunity to obtain her master’s degree in Connecticut. Returning to Liberia in 1986, she assumed the role of Senior Budget Analyst within the Budget Bureau. She remained in this role until the civil war forced her to relocate to the United States in 1990.
Mayme settled in Kansas City, Kansas, where she secured a middle school teaching position with the Wyandotte County Board of Education. It was in Kansas City where she found her church home at the Our Lady & St. Rose Catholic Church under the beloved leadership of Father Dennis Wait. Mayme used this time to continue her joy of being in service to others by volunteering at the Sanctuary of Hope. In 2002, Mayme transitioned to Atlanta, Georgia, to be closer to her daughter, Carine-lisa Titus-Dolan.
Most importantly, Mayme touched the lives of everyone with whom she came in contact, especially her family. Our mother, aunt, cousin and friend was kind and considerate to others. In typical Brumskine fashion, she shared her love of life and laughter with everyone she met. She consistently extended her patience, generosity, and kindness to complete strangers.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Carine-lisa Titus-Dolan and Alice Brumskine; her grandchildren, Khalil James Nasser and Richard James Dolan II; sister-in-law, Lucille Brumskine; nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of other relatives; and life-long friendships with Cecelia Freeman-Greene, Theresa Smith-Taylor, Gwendolyn Gooding-Wilson, J. Wesseh McClain, and Edith Grimes.
Although her family will no longer know her in temporal form, which causes them much sadness, their memories that of her will live forevermore in their hearts. While we miss her terribly here on earth, she has gone home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ! Knowing that she immersed her life in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we believe, without a doubt, that Mayme’s spirit has been received in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. We can imagine that while the host of heavenly beings are worshiping and praising the Almighty God in eternity, our beloved Mayme is praising the Lord in her characteristic calm manner.
May she rest in eternal peace, and may God’s light continue to shine upon her.
The wake-keeping and home-going services for Ms. Mayme L. Brumskine will be held at the West Cobb Funeral Home at 2480 Macland Rd, Marietta, Georgia. The wake-keeping service will be on Friday, November 30, 2018, at 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The funeral service will be on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at 9 a.m.
In December 2018, the mortal remains of our loving mother will be returned to Liberia and interred in the Brumskine Family plot in Upper Buchanan.
