Matthew Kurt Shelkop

July 30, 1968 — January 20, 2023

Kurt Shelkop was born on July 30, 1968 to John and Kathryn Shelkop in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the youngest of four siblings, to include his brothers Darrel and John, and his sister Christine. He graduated from Kennesaw State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Kurt and his wife Suzanne have been married for 31 years. Together they had four daughters to include Courtney, Nicole, Allison, and Erica. Kurt and Suzanne have built their lives together on the foundation that family comes first. They have instilled this value in their daughters. His commitment to build a future for his daughters was beyond exemplary, supporting them in their passions such as coming to every home game during their marching band performances, encouraging them in their efforts toward their education, and being there to help them persevere through their challenges. To his girls, he will always be known as CK (Cornhusker Kool), a nickname he made when they would play together. He was preceded in death by his brother Daryl, his daughter Courtney, his mother Kathryn, and his father John Shelkop.

Kurt built a career founded in the industry of construction and building materials. He enjoyed working in the field of residential construction, and last held a position as a Key Accountant Representative with Builders FirstSource. Some. In addition to work, Kurt loved to play. He was involved in multiple sports, recreationally and competitively, throughout his life including soccer, waterskiing, wrestling, and Taekwondo. In 1989, Kurt earned a First-Degree Black Belt in taekwondo and continued to learn about other martial arts through books and media sources. Kurt also had a great fondness for the 80s rock music so familiar to Generation-X. If you were ever lucky enough to ride around with him in his white Mercury coupe with professional grade sound, bands like AC-DC, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, and others could pound your guts with a bass drum or melt your face with a guitar solo. You could hear Thunderstruck a mile away, leaving you wondering how long it would take the windows to break.

Ultimately, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. They created many memories while enjoying trips as a family to places like Disney World, Lake of the Ozarks, Lake Chatuge, and trips to Michigan with Suzanne’s family. As he and Suzanne had laid that foundation for putting family first, it was the family time together that made it all worth it. The memories of his laugh, his smile, his wonderful cooking, and his immense love will be with all who knew him, family and friends, for the rest of their lives.
