LaVerne Jameson Sweeney

LaVerne Jameson Sweeney, age 86, departed this life to embark on her next adventure Tuesday, May 9, 2023 in Marietta, Georgia. LaVerne was born January 26, 1937 in Tyler, Texas. LaVerne had a thirst for knowledge. She graduated from Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from Florida State University, a Master's degree in teaching from Rollins College in Winter Park Florida, and Specialists's degrees in guidance counseling and school administration from Georgia State University.

Her love of learning naturally led to a career in education. She began her teaching career at Brenau Academy in Gainesville, Georgia in 1959, where she taught physical education. She later became a guidance counselor at Floyd Middle School in Mableton, GA, and completed her career as Assistant Principal at Pine Mountain Middle School in Kennesaw, GA from 1981-2001. She served as a mentor for new teachers, and deeply loved helping to mold middle school age children. In addition to her career in education, she served as Guardian ad Litem to represent the interests of children in court proceedings.

LaVerne was an intrepid adventurer who loved to travel. She accomplished her goal of visiting every continent in the world, and regaled us all with her hilarious adventures. She cherished the friendships she forged through her travels. One of her adventures was volunteering for the 1996 Olympic games held in Atlanta. She served as the driver for the Netherlands Olympic team.

LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents, Louis J. Sweeney and Dorris Lewis Sweeney and her brother, Michael Lane Sweeney. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Sweeney Eck, and her best friend, travel partner and caregiver, Kay Dean. She is also survived by nephews Christian Eck III (Mary Ann), Laurin Eck (Darla), David Eck (Angela), Michael Sweeney (Stacy) and a niece, Ramona Sweeney, as well as a host of grand nephews and nieces and friends around the world.
