The firecracker. The matriarch.
The light and strength of our family.
This is to honor and remember one hell of a woman, whom we lost on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Born, December 16, 1945, in LaGrange, GA, Laquita Faye Blackmon was lovingly known by all as “Queet”. She was the familial glue that provided love, music, laughter and tenacity for her family and friends. As the matriarch of the family, she took it upon herself to guide, instill, and ensure that her light and strength were felt by all she loved. She not only provided words of wisdom in moments of weakness, but also pushed her loved ones to stand tall and to be strong. Strength was her gift. She was woman who held many titles. The ones that meant the most to her included beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her first friendship and love was her twin sister, Ouida. They were the last two of eight children born to James E. and Reba S. Turner.
Not surprisingly, Quita’s love of music started at a very young age. She spent the majority of her childhood singing in church, talent shows, competitions, and school choirs. Alongside Quida, she won a singing competition at Lakewood Amphitheater…this was a moment of pride in her musical journey. Music influenced every aspect of her life. She played the piano, guitar, and ukulele, and loved writing and composing songs and poems. At the age of 15, her family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida. She attended and graduated from Palm Beach High School where she was also known for her exceptional talent and passion for music. Upon her return to Georgia in her twenties, she became an essential part of two bands, The Jeweltones and Country Krazy. Her talents went beyond music to participating in multiple competitions for drawing and sketching and her love of bowling.
Throughout her life, she spent her time recording songs with her family – most notably, her husband, Tony. Laquita and Tony married on May 23, 1975 in Marietta, GA. They spent the next 49 years building a life full of love, loyalty, a shared passion for music, and, let’s be honest, a fair share of crazy times too. They have seen each other through the trials and triumphs of raising their daughters, losing loved ones along the way, and the births of their grandchildren.
If you were one of the lucky ones, you had the opportunity to be by her side doing what our family does best - playing music, singing and dancing at our infamous garage parties until the late night hours. She loved nothing more than being surrounded by all of her family, reminiscing and swaying by a speaker to some of her favorites: The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Elvis Presley.
She never turned down an opportunity at family get togethers to join in playing softball, volleyball, horseshoes, basketball, or badminton – just to mention a few. A surprising fact that some of you may not know is that Quita loved to surf and spent alot of her time in Florida as a young woman doing just that.
She was also a devoted sports fan; fiercely loyal to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Especially her “Dawgs!”
Quita's sense of humor and sarcasm was unmatched, and her wit brought laughter to all who knew her. She was outspoken, strong-willed, fiercely opinionated, and loyal to a fault. She may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but she left her mark on everyone she met. Quita was fun and light-hearted, loved a good joke or prank, and loved to laugh. She was always unapologetically herself.
Laquita loved the holidays, but especially Christmas. Come December, her home was transformed into a winter wonderland with a Christmas tree fit for Macy’s. Her traditions were important to her, and she passed those values on to everyone in our family.
She had a class and style of her own. She loved expensive things, had exceptional taste, and diamonds were her favorite. Rings on every finger, neck draped in gold…and still wanted more! Her style was timeless; just like her.
Laquita’s professional life was diverse and fulfilling. She styled wigs at Jefferson's Department Store in Florida, bringing beauty and confidence to many. Later, she became the Property Manager at Country Place Apartments in Marietta, GA, where she was known for her dedication and kindness. Most importantly, she devoted her life and her whole heart to being a homemaker to her two daughters, Mandie and Kaci, and to her loving husband, Tony.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Anthony D. Blackmon; her loving daughters, Mandie Hunseder (Deborah Hunseder) and Kaci Ngov (Leng Ngov); her cherished identical twin sister, Ouida Mae Williams; her adored granddaughters, Tiffany Huffman (Stephen Huffman), Taylor Boling, Kennedi Hammett, Adriana Ngov, Victoria Ngov; and her treasured great-grandsons, Jaylen, Landon, and Liam Huffman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James E. Turner and Reba S. Turner, and her older siblings who were an integral part of her life, Jewel Awtrey, William Turner, Buford Turner, James Turner, Charles Turner, and Kenneth Turner.
Our Mother, Sister, Daughter, Wife, MaMaw, Ga-Ga will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Laquita Faye Blackmon, 78, of Marietta, GA, passed peacefully on June 20, 2024. At the end of her life, she was surrounded by the two things that meant the most to her…family and music.
A celebration of her life will be held at 5pm, Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the home of Kaci & Leng Ngov at 2871 Eva Clb Acworth, GA 30101 where friends and family will gather to honor her memory.
