Judith Marie Seldon was born on August 31, 1958, in Brooklyn, New York and was the second of the three daughters of Mr. Kenneth H. Hazell and the late Mrs. Dorothy M. Hazell. Judith was affectionately known as “Judi” to almost everyone who knew her.
After completing her public school education, Judi went on the earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Brooklyn College, a Master of Science degree in Technology Education from NY Institute of Technology and a Specialist Certificate of Advanced Study from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. Her academic successes were many, as were the lifelong friendships and sisterhoods she was blessed with along the way.
Judi began her educational career as a substitute teacher in a NYC public school, where she soon advanced to full time teaching for many years. This was followed by a few years as a full-time teacher in Nassau County, NY and culminated with her 19-year career with the Birney Elementary School in Cobb County, GA. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Judi loved teaching, flourished in the profession and mentored many new teachers. She did not just think of teaching as a job or career, but a God-given gift.
Judi accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and faithfully served God until the very end. She was baptized at an early age at the family church, The Brooklyn Pentecostal Assembly. During her many years there, Judi was an usher, youth choir director and a member of the young ladies’ singing group, The New Believers. She also served as a vacation bible school teacher, led her colleagues in daily morning prayer before school, and started a phone prayer service with husband Kevin and Flame A Blaze Ministry. Judi’s later found fellowship as a member of The Brooklyn Tabernacle in NY and, later, Trinity Chapel and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Georgia.
Being born into a family that loved music, Judi learned to play piano and violin during her formative years. She loved reading, conversing in Spanish, traveling, shopping, playing games and watching movies with her family. Always ready to bless others with her giving spirit and gift of hospitality, Judi loved entertaining and opened her home to so many. She always kept in close touch with family and friends - remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant occasions in the lives of others.
On Friday, September 29, 2023, God called Judith home to be with Him, where she will receive her reward as a “good and faithful servant”. She was always sharing His light and love wherever she went and illuminated the room with her infectious, winning smile. We thank God that Judi and her husband Kevin were blessed to celebrate 30 years of love, respect and commitment.
Judi is survived by her devoted and loving husband Kevin Seldon of Powder Springs, GA; sons, Paul Jamal II (Melisa) of Tampa, FL and Akeem Jamal of Union City, GA; and stepdaughter, Danielle Seldon of Jamaica, NY. She also leaves to cherish precious memories: her father, Kenneth Hazell of Austell, GA; sisters, Janice Hazell and Karen Hazell of Augusta, GA; granddaughters, Nayla, Miya, Camille, Chloe and Tatyana; grandson, Sincere; nephew, Malik; sister-in-law, Karen Barrow (Curtis); godmothers; godchildren, godsisters, an aunt, and a host of cousins, friends and loved ones who will miss her dearly.
