United States Army Master Sergeant (Retired) Joseph Garber Haydon, age 85, of Lithia Springs, Georgia passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Powder Springs Rev. Roger Vest officiating. He will lie in state at the church from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Interment will follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta with full military honors.
Born in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Haydon graduated from Blairsville High School and worked at GC Murphy's store in Blairsville. He joined the United States Army (Drafted) in 1953. After basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Joe served in states all over America, including Fort Gordon, GA. He served at White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico, and then in Iceland for one year. He served in Germany for three years, Fort Dix, New Jersey for one year and served in the Vietnam War (1968-1969). After returning from Vietnam, he was stationed at Fort Mead, Maryland. He received the Bronze Star Medal and many other commendations while in the service. Mr. Haydon served at Fort McPherson until retiring in 1974 as Master Sergeant from the United States Army where he served for 22years. Afterwards, he worked as a manager for Arthur Young/Ernst and Young for several years. He was also an avid model train collector and enthusiast, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Powder Springs.
He was preceded in death by 3 children, Velma Haydon, Kenneth Haydon, and Gene Gunter Jr. Survivors include: Wife: Charlotte G. Haydon, Lithia Springs, GA; Children, Betty Jo (Danny) Lamb, Tampa, FL, Karen Sanborn, Las Cruces, NM, Mary Jo (Sammy) Apodaca, Las Cruces, NM, Bobby (Nicole) Haydon, Newnan, GA Kim (Sean) Mormon, Newnan, GA, Cynthia (J.R.) Ash, Dallas, GA, Barry A. (Connie) Gunter, Loganville, GA; 22 Grandchildren and 24 Great Grandchildren.
