John Herschel Faulkner of Bear Creek, AL, passed away at his home in Marietta, GA, on July 13, 2022, at 87. John is preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher and Irene Faulkner, and by his siblings, Fred and Adrian Faulkner, Irene Hall, and Clara Bailey. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Williams Faulkner of Springhill Community; children, Lisa Gallion (David) and Mark Faulkner (Belinda); and grandchildren, Timothy and Claire Gallion and Bradley, Erin, and Piper Faulkner.
John graduated from the University of Alabama and completed MDiv and DMin degrees from Southwestern Baptist Seminary. He pastored in Alabama and Texas and served 17 years in the Alabama National Guard. In 1970, he became a missionary to Zimbabwe with the International Mission Board, spending his last ten years of service as IMB area director for eastern and southern Africa.
On the mission field, John was known for his wide and eclectic skill set and especially for his ability to repair almost anything-from automotive equipment to appliances. He loved his fellow missionaries, and he loved the people of the African countries where he served. He especially enjoyed the opportunity to lead Friendship Baptist Church in Springville, AL, after retiring from the IMB. In his final retirement years, he made himself available to his family, his neighbors, and the people he met in his daily life. He truly had a heart to serve and encourage others.
A celebration of John's life will be held on August 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Friendship Baptist in Springville, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions.
