Dr. Joel R. Benk passed away on the morning of May 14th, 2014. He is survived by his wife Debbie Benk and four children, Joshua Benk (Nicole), Eva Sales (Trevor), Jessica Benk, Ryan Benk and one grandchild.
He was born 11 August 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating high school and attending two colleges in New York he transferred to the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Science.
In 1980, Dr. Benk graduated the prestigious Emory University Dental School in Atlanta where he earned his DDS degree and later served as a faculty member. For over 3 decades he has been practicing dentistry in the Atlanta area.
He’s also a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and was certified by the MISCH International Implant Institute. Dr. Benk was internationally recognized as a teacher in the CEREC 3D method, an extremely advanced technology for creating lifelike ceramic tooth restorations. He has personally trained hundreds of dentists on how to get optimum cosmetic outcomes for their patients with ceramic restorations. And he’s published many articles in professional dental publications on achieving excellent clinical results using CEREC 3D.
Dr. Benk has written articles for Dentistry Today and Contemporary Esthetics, sharing his knowledge and insights with other dentists. This includes an award-winning article published in 2006 on the use of techniques for dental injections that are comfortable. Dr. Benk has also been featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Intown, Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta Dentist and Dental Life.
He has been at the forefront of cosmetic dentistry since 1980 and has treated thousands of cases. He equipped his office with the latest in technology to provide all of the high-tech cosmetic dentistry procedures available today.
Dr. Benk has been the on-call dentist for over two decades at the historic Fox Theatre, one of Atlanta’s premiere venues for live entertainment. Over the years he has treated cast members in headline productions such as Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Stomp and The Lion King. He has also treated multiple professional athletes including competitors in the Centennial Olympics and players for the Atlanta Falcons.
Dr. Benk was a proud member of multiple dental groups including: the American Dental Association, Northern District Dental Society, The Academy of Computerized Dentistry and the Georgia Dental Association. In 2007 he spoke to over eighteen hundred doctors and staff in Las Vegas about advanced cosmetic dentistry.
He always believed in giving back to his community. He was a sponsor for The Way to Happiness, the Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights, the Foundation for a Drug Free World, and the Concerned Businessman Association of America.
He was passionate as a drug prevention activist helping to curb soaring prescription drug abuse by making the Truth About Drugs available to colleagues, educators and law enforcement professionals. Seeing the program’s effectiveness, he disseminated it to those who deal with drug abuse and provide drug prevention professionally—local police departments, school systems and drug courts.
Dr. Joel Benk cherished his family, children and grandchild. Besides his love for dentistry, he enjoyed traveling, skiing, fishing, boating and supporting his community.
He was a very enthusiastic and passionate man who brought life and happiness to those around him. The test of a life well-lived is answered by asking two questions: Did he do what he intended? and, We’re people glad that he lived?
Dr. Joel Benk answered those questions in a truly stellar fashion and will be sincerely remembered by family, friends and his community.
