Ms. Jerrie S. Cheek, age 85, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 11am at the West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory in Marietta with Rev. Richard Hemphill officiating. Friends and family are welcome to attend visitation from 10am to 11am, with her memorial service following immediately after.
A resident of Cobb County for more than five decades, Ms. Cheek was a native of Hiawassee, Georgia. She graduated from Towns County High School and attended Georgia College. A third-generation educator, she served in Georgia public education for 32 years. Her career began as a substitute teacher in Cobb County School District, then serving for twenty years as a paraprofessional educator at Osborne Middle School and Russell Elementary School. She subsequently became an instructional technology specialist in the Educational Technology Training Center at Kennesaw State University. In both capacities, she was highly regarded and loved by the teachers and students she supported and taught. Despite coming to instructional technology at more than fifty years old, she earned an outstanding statewide reputation in the field for her professional knowledge, teaching quality, and tireless and enthusiastic dedication to helping educators utilize technology to increase learning and opportunities for Georgia's public school students.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Ernest Vandiver Smith, Ms. Annie Louise Rogers, her step-father, A.R. Rogers, her brother, Mr. James Ernest Smith, and her daughter, Ms. Pamela Renee Cheek. She is survived by her 4 children - Ms. Patricia Ann Beck, Mr. Michael Douglas Layton, Mr. Glenn Eric Cheek, Jr. (Babs) and Dr. Traci Cheek Dishman (Mike); 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 siblings, Mr. Anthony Rogers (Jane) and Ms. Andrea Lucille Dyer (Tony), her sister-in-law, Pat Smith, her nephew, Jimmy Smith, and her cousin Mr. Van A. Burns (Denise).
