James “Jim” McKenzie Thomson, 85, of Barney, GA, passed away February 24, 2012 at Morning Light Center in Marietta, GA.
He is survived by a daughter, Robin Cooper of Barney; granddaughter, Cortney Cooper of Ocala, FL; grandson, Jeremy (Monica) Cooper; grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison of Winder and a good friend, Bonnell Holmes.
Born in Scotland on January 4, 1927, he came to the United States at age 3. He moved to Barney in 2004.
Mr. Thomson was a graduate of Michigan State University and worked in various capacities as an engineer until his retirement. He was a member of the Christian Science Church in Thomasville and was, at the time of his death, Chairman of the Board. He was a WWII Veteran and was a member of the October 2010 Honor Flight to Washington. Mr. Thomson was active in VFW Post 5659 and was instrumental in erecting the Veterans Memorial, on the courthouse square, and was responsible for voluntarily laying all of the memorial bricks. He was also a member of the Brooks County Family Connection Board and several other organizations.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, March 11, 3 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Quitman, GA.
