James Howard Smalley, 97 passed from this life on March 14, 2023. At the time of his passing, he was a resident of Brickmont Senior Living in Marietta, Georgia. Prior to his time at Brickmont, James was a long-time resident of Smyrna, Georgia.
James was Born in Stephens County, Georgia on August 11, 1925. James grew up in a large family with two brothers and four sisters, of which he was the second youngest.
James was an avid outdoorsman and at a young age he would hunt and fish with just his dog as a companion. He learned skills in the outdoors that would serve him the rest of his life. He truly was a young Huckleberry Finn.
James joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Pacific during WWII with the occupation forces in Japan. He would say in later years that the Navy was the adventure of his life time.
James married Juanita Dryman of Stephens County, Georgia in 1947 after his military service was completed. James and Juanita had three sons: Brooke, David and Keith.
James was employed by the Georgia Power Company for 46 years after which he enjoyed 30 years of retirement.
James and Juanita were among founding members of the Smyrna Church of Christ and attended there for many years. Eventually they moved their membership to the Central Church of Christ in Smyrna where James served as a Deacon.
James and Juanita were married for 67 years before her passing in 2017.
James is survived by his three sons, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was a cool guy and will be missed by all.
