James “Chick” Melvin Dodd, Jr. of Powder Springs, GA died peacefully in his home on July 18th, 2022 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judith Reach Dodd, his two children, Jonathan Noel Dodd and Anna Marie Dodd, his three grandsons, Lucas Noel Dodd, Logan James Dodd, and Leander Michael Dodd, and his two sisters, Christine Dodd Puckett and Barbara Dodd Broome.
Chick was born on August 24, 1941 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta to his father, James Melvin Dodd, and his mother, Dorothy Camp Dodd. He grew up in the West End neighborhood of Atlanta, and graduated from Brown High School, where he played in the band. He then went on to attend Southern Tech where he received an Associate’s Degree in engineering. After his service in the US Army, he continued to serve in the Georgia Air National Guard while beginning his 41-year career as an electrical sales engineer with Square D Company. Some of his projects included the above-ground portion of Disney World, Red Lobster, the C&S skyscraper (now Bank of America) in downtown Atlanta, the CDC renovation, and the Home Depot Headquarters. Over the years, he enjoyed many different hobbies, including model rockets, NASCAR, and current events.
His friends loved him for his dry sense of humor, generosity, and loyalty. He was a committed, devoted, and treasured husband. He showed his son what it means to be a father and gave him strength in dark times by showing tender support and admiration. Even amid his confusion during his last years of life, he remembered to end every phone call to his daughter with “Well, I love you girl, and I’m proud of you.” His grandsons remember how Grandaddy would sit in his favorite chair to tell them funny stories about his life, laugh with them, and listen to them. His youngest grandson remembers that, “He was grumpy sometimes just like me, and I liked that.” Chick’s favorite days of the year were the holidays that gave him an excuse to spend time with his sisters, who made his face light up without fail. He will be missed, but his loved ones can rejoice and be comforted by the knowledge that he is out of pain and in the presence of his Lord Jesus Christ, who was truly the driving force of his life.
The funeral service will be held at Midway Presbyterian Church on July 21, 2022 at 11:00am with interment to follow. The family will welcome visitors before the service starting at 10:00am.
