Dr. James D. Barrs, age 77, of Mableton, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Friday, April 19, 2013, in the Chapel of West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory, Marietta, with Dr. Richard Walker officiating. The family will receive friends from 12pm until the service.
Survivors include his children, Jeff (Vicki) Barrs of Hiram and Julie Ann Barrs of Alpharetta; sister, Martha (Phil) Robertson and brother, W.J. (Eileen) Barrs.
Born and raised in Quitman, GA; Dr. Barrs was a Veteran of the United States Army where he also served as an optometrist. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he went into practice for himself and at one time had three offices throughout metro Atlanta. He retired in 2011.
Dr. Barrs enjoyed taking his children to Panama City Beach during summer vacations. He also enjoyed golf, gardening and going to the lake. Dr. Barrs spent much of his time sitting outside on his carport talking to his neighbors and listening to music. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, American Optometry Association and the Georgia Optometry Association.
