Gwendolyn Spain, age 58, of Powder Springs, Georgia passed away February 2, 2020. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, GA.
Gwendolyn Spain was born on October 30, 1961 to Pecolia and William Spain of New York, NY. She was a native of and attended public school in New York City until the 9th grade. After the death of her mother, she moved to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina to live with her aunt Annie Mae Alston who was instrumental in raising her. She attended Northwest High School in Littleton, NC and graduated in 1979. She then attended North Carolina Central University where she received a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. After graduating NCCU, she began a career as a magistrate in Raleigh, NC for 17 years.
Gwen, as she was affectionately known, relocated to Powder Springs, GA in 2003 and received her master's degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia, furthering her career as a social worker. She loved to spend time with family and friends, and was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was passionate about both working in and giving back to her community. She loved animals, and would also spend much of her time with her beloved pets.
Gwen passed on February 2, 2020 at her home in Powder Springs. She was preceded by her mother, Pecolia Spain; her father, William Spain; and her aunt, Annie Mae Alston. She is survived by her daughter, Asha Smith, of Powder Springs, GA; her two brothers: William Spain (Loretta) of Tampa, FL and Vincent Spain (Michelle) of Queens, NY. Additionally, she is survived by five nieces, one nephew, two great nieces, two great nephews, and a host of cousins, Sorors, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 7, 2020 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
