OBITUARY

Gloria Fay Mickelson passed away quickly and went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 2, 2024.  She was born to M. Douglas and Bertha (Draeger) Mickelson on December 6, 1938 in Adrian, North Dakota.  She attended school in Adrian and later in Jamestown, ND.  Gloria attended North Dakota State University where she graduated with a BA degree.  She married James Alden Maetzold and had 3 beautiful children.

Before she had children, she worked as a Dietician at a Hospital in Georgia.  Later she was a full-time homemaker and Mother.  She volunteered with garden clubs in Virginia and North Dakota.  Gloria was an exceptional flower arranger and created beautiful arrangements.  She later became a Lifetime member of the National Garden Clubs and attended many National Conventions.  Gloria also was an exceptional “Chef”.  Growing up, she was taught by her mother, Bertha, about gardening and so she always had a garden growing of vegetables and flowers.  Later in life, Gloria incorporated her own recipes in many of her tea parties she would host.  At one time she was growing over 50 types of edible herbs and used many in her dishes.

In the last 10 years or so, Gloria designated herself as the official letter writer of her clan.  She wrote letters to all her kids monthly and grandkids too.  She made an effort to be grateful of those around her and a light of encouragement and grace portraying the love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She had recently moved to Georgia to be with her daughter, Angie (Doug), granddaughter, Skardi (Steve) and great grandchildren Elliana and Zayden.

She is survived by her children, Derek (Sharon) Maetzold of Friendswood, Texas; Angie (Doug) Mayes of Dallas, Georgia; and Cherie (Tom) Sullivan of Annandale, Virginia; her brothers Rodney Mickelson of North Dakota/Arizona and Roger (Bev) Mickelson of Arizona; and her grandchildren Skardi (Steve) Brown, John (Brittni) Maetzold, Emily (Jon) Kirk, William (Ember) Sullivan, Peter (Michelle) Maetzold, Hannah Maetzold, Cianna (Jonathan) Peace, Patrick Sullivan, and Erina Sullivan; as well as her great-grandchildren Elliana Brown, Zayden Brown, Charlotte Maetzold, Eloise Maetzold, Josephine Maetzold, John Jr. Maetzold and Mary Kate Maetzold.

Gloria Mickelson is proceeded in death by her parents W. Douglas Mickelson and Bertha (Dreager) Mickelson.

A Celebration Service in honor of Gloria Mickelson’s life will be held on August 24, 2024, from 10am to 1pm at New Life Church in Jamestown, North Dakota. The time and location are to be announced.
