Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 49 years, Lillard Howard Roberts, in 1991. She is survived by 4 children: Patricia J. Hawes, Marietta, GA; Margaret J. (Peggy) Gardner, Houston, TX; Pamela R. Nix, Stone Mountain, GA; and Elizabeth (Beth) Schneider, Seneca, SC; 1 sibling: L.C. Hammons, Fayetteville, TN; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A native of Tennessee, Margaret was a long-time member of Madison Church of Christ, where she worked as personal secretary for Dr. Ira North and later as the church elders’ secretary. She served as a junior high Sunday-school teacher for many years. She organized and served in the clothing and sewing rooms at Madison Church of Christ and cooked for and delivered Meals on Wheels. 23 years ago, she moved to Georgia and was an active member of Burnt Hickory Church of Christ in Marietta and helped establish a ladies Bible class there.
During their marriage and Howard’s time serving in the United States Army, they were stationed in multiple locations around the country, as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. Wherever they were stationed, they always found ways to support the local Church of Christ, even helping to establish a church in Puerto Rico.
Margaret was appreciated for her generosity and thoughtfulness, always reaching out to those in need. She loved cooking big meals for her family and friends, who especially appreciated her down-home cooking. She was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables, which she enjoyed sharing with others. She loved playing cards with her grandchildren and card group friends at their monthly gatherings.
