Edward D. Bayley

Edward Dean Bayley, age 72, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 13, 2015 from complications of cancer. Edward, or “Ed” was born in May 1943 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the son of Thomas and Hazel Bayley. The Bayley family moved to Connecticut where Ed graduated from Stamford High School. Ed served honorably as an aircraft mechanic with the United States Marine Corps and was involved during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ed began work with the Marietta Fire Department in 1968, retiring in May 1998 as a Firefighter-Engineer. Ed was an excellent mechanic working two jobs like most fireman of the era.
Ed, whose nickname was “Boomer” due to his loud voice, was a tireless proponent of organized labor. Ed was very active with the Marietta Professional Firefighters Union Local 1460, the Professional Firefighters of Georgia, and the International Association of Firefighters. Ed took up the difficult task time and time again to stand up for city employees and the people they protected. Ed was still very active with the Union even in retirement. Ed was serving as the Secretary Treasurer for Local 1460 and will be dearly missed.
Ed was helpful to his family, friends and community. Whether it was working on a car at no charge, or speaking to elected officials about employee rights or a zoning issue for a neighbor, Ed was always willing to stand up and help out. Ed was a good man and will be missed.
Ed is survived by his son, Frank Bayley of Richmond, Kansas, sister Patricia Freeman and her husband James of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, niece Susan Moisan, and in Marietta, longtime companion Becky Sager, her daughter Sarah and grandson Michael. Visitation will be Saturday, September 19, 2015 from Noon to 2 pm, at West Cobb Funeral Home, 2480 Macland Rd, Marietta, GA 30064, with Memorial Services to follow.
