Dr. John Barrett Wilcox, beloved husband, father, died with family at his side in Marietta, Georgia on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at the age of 67 following an almost 7 year battle with pancreatic cancer. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia.
John was born to Colonel Richard and Mary Wilcox in 1955 in Marietta, GA. He is survived by his daughters Katie Wilcox and Jaimie Quintero and his brother Tom Wilcox.
Throughout the years John made a huge impact on his family, friends and neighbors. He was a teacher to everyone he knew, a mentor to many and greatly enjoyed helping others plan for their lives and succeed. John raised by example two fine daughters who have been successful in life and are also compassionate and quick to do whatever they can to help others in need.
John loved woodworking, going to the cabin up in Blue Ridge, brewing beer and making wine, listening to music, cooking and constantly learning new things. He was a very successful PhD chemist, environmental engineer and manager. While John will be dearly missed by family and friends, we know he is at peace and watching over us.
John always tried to make the most out of life. He married his wife Julie Wilcox (who passed in May 2023 of brain cancer) in 1988 in California. In their years on the west coast, John and Julie enjoyed visiting wineries, national parks, and scenic resorts. He enjoyed fine dining and wines, and was an accomplished cook and entertainer. John loved to travel and particularly enjoyed family trips to Europe to celebrate graduations.
Unfortunately John's life took a hard turn in 2017, when he was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. However, John was miraculously able to turn that diagnosis around and get surgery and eventually go into remission. Then in February 2020 he was diagnosed and fought bravely for nearly 4 years before passing. The family and loved ones rallied around him, and provided support, care and comfort as his illness progressed until he passed away peacefully on the evening of November 11, 2023 in the presence of his family.
John's family would like to recognize and graciously the many neighbors, family friends and extended family members for their condolences, concern, help and emotional support that was freely given during this tough time of need. John truly loved and appreciated you all.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta, Georgia.
