Doris Garrettson, a remarkable soul who graced this world with her presence for 101 blessed years, peacefully passed away in Marietta, Georgia on June 25, 2023, surrounded by the warmth and love of her cherished ones. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Calverton National Cemetery in Wading River, NY.
Born on July 29, 1921, in the vibrant city of New York, NY, Doris was the beloved daughter of Anzy Henderson, hailing from Sapelo Island, Georgia, and Georgia Brown, a native of Savannah, Georgia. Her rich heritage and diverse roots shaped her character and instilled in her a deep appreciation for her Southern origins.
In the year 1941, Doris exchanged vows with the love of her life, Clifford Randolph Garrettson Sr., known affectionately as Jack, in New York. Their union was blessed with the gift of four children, Janice, Clifford Jr., Craig, and Lawrence, who became the center of their world and the source of immeasurable joy throughout their lives.
Doris, affectionately known as Mama Doris, devoted her professional endeavors to caring for others as a Nurse Practitioner at the esteemed Manhattan State VA Hospital. Her dedication to healing and compassion touched countless lives, leaving an indelible impact on both her colleagues and the patients fortunate enough to cross her path.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mama Doris exemplified unwavering devotion to her Christian faith, harboring a profound love for the Lord. For over two decades, she dedicated herself to the First Methodist Church in Roosevelt. Within the church, she actively contributed as an usher and a valued member of the Choir. Doris wholeheartedly served on numerous church committees, including but not limited to the summer vacation Bible school, the Free lunch program, and the Food Bank. Only upon relocating to Freeport did she change churches, joining a Lutheran congregation.
Aside from her religious involvement, Doris indulged in her passion for bowling. She excelled as one of the leading bowlers within her family league and actively participated in the Senior bowling league. Additionally, she enjoyed engaging in a bid whist card club alongside her neighborhood friends. Doris frequently visited Atlantic City, as she held a fondness for gambling. Her adventurous spirit extended beyond the United States, venturing to destinations such as Paris, Italy, Belgium, and the Bahamas.
Doris remained committed to serving others. She graciously volunteered part-time at the Roosevelt Head Start Program, making a meaningful impact in the lives of young children. Additionally, she became an esteemed member and cook at the Rosa Parks Senior Center in Roosevelt. In recognition of her invaluable contributions to the center, Doris was bestowed the esteemed Rosa Parks Senior Center Enrichment Award.
Doris's true legacy lies in the love and warmth she shared with her family. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. She created a haven of love and support, nurturing her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with unwavering affection. Her home was a place of laughter, joy, and heartfelt gatherings that created lifelong memories.
Throughout her remarkable journey, Doris Garrettson embodied grace, strength, and an unwavering spirit. Her enduring legacy will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. While we mourn her passing, we celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the countless lives she touched along the way.
