Betty Jean Thomas Godfrey, 91, of McCaysville, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Betty was married to Marvin Godfrey for 62 years, before his passing in 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Pam and her husband Ron Younker of Marietta, and son Marty and his wife Becky Finfrock Godfrey of Powder Springs. Grandchildren include David Younker and wife Katy of Marietta; Matt Godfrey and wife Laura of Kennesaw; John Younker and wife Sarah of Atlanta; Chris Godfrey and wife Ashley of Alpharetta; Stephanie Godfrey of Marietta. Also surviving is Betty's beloved sister June Thomas of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Great grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy are: Sevy and William Younker; Josie and Caleb Younker, Reese, Rowen, Lerner, and Merit Godfrey.
The grandkids enjoyed having "Betts" or "Betsy" in their lives with her Southern cooking, back-porch chats, fun trips to the store, and the interest she took in what was going on in their lives.
Betty was a life-long learner, graduating first in her class at McCaysville High School. Immediately following graduation, she married Marvin and accompanied him to North Carolina, while he served in the United States Marine Corps. Upon their return to McCaysville, after the Korean War, Betty and Marvin started their family. Later, Betty began a successful career with the United States Postal Service, where she worked at the McCaysville Post Office, and retired as the Postmaster of the Epworth Post Office. Betty loved the Lord and served the church as pianist, organist, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Choir Director, Women's Missionary Union President, and Vacation Bible School Director. Her love of the Lord and His church is probably the greatest legacy she leaves, as her family continues this today.
Visitation with Betty's family will be held at the West Cobb Funeral Home at 2480 Macland Road, Marietta from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. A graveside service will also be held at Copper Ridge Memory Gardens at 5724 Blue Ridge Drive in Blue Ridge, Georgia, on Monday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of McCaysville, 104 Toccoa Ave, McCaysville, GA 30555 or myfirstbaptist.church. (capital improvements).
