Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta with Rev. Richard Hemphill officiating. Interment will follow at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta, Georgia.
Avis Chambless was born Avis Elizabeth Wynne on August 31, 1920 in Metter, Georgia, the firstborn of her parents, Riley and Pearl Wynne. Her siblings were Virginia, Riley Mae and Paul. She was married to York Chambless for 52 years prior to his homegoing in 1997. Avis and York are survived by three children, Brenda, Glenda and David (Lynn); three grandchildren, Matthew (Ashley) Chambless, Erin Funk and Katie (Kenny) Layton; and seven great-grandchildren, Allikaye, Cambria and Kai Chambless, Anna and Riley Funk, and Olive and Grady Layton.
Avis' greatest decision in her 100+ years was committing her life at age seven to Jesus Christ, her Savior and Lord. Following graduation from Tift College, Mom enrolled at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 1944, studying Religious Education and considering missions, specifically to Israel. God redirected her calling when she married York. In 1949 York and Avis moved to Smyrna where they served with First Baptist Church and Trinity Fellowship. Besides serving in church as a teacher, choir member and pastor's wife, Avis taught school many years in Smyrna, at Belmont Hills Elementary and primarily at Russell Elementary. Avis will be remembered for her love for Christ, family and friends; her enjoyment of working hard in the home, church and community; and her faithful dependence on her Savior as she glorified Him with her life.
