Arthur Clifton Couch, age 89, died of natural causes on January 26, 2018. He was residing at Aspen Village Senior Living, where he lived with his wife, Nancy.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy Carlisle Couch; his two daughters, Susan Couch Dewberry (spouse Dennis Dewberry), of Hiram, and Dana Couch Mobley (spouse Royce Mobley), of Suwanee. He is also survived by seven adult grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Arthur was born on March 11, 1928 in Westminster, South Carolina to parents Sabbath Arie Head Couch Garmon and William Brewer Couch. He spent most of his youth in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
At the age of 17 Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for three years. During his time of service, he followed the branch known as the Army Air Corps. Upon returning home Arthur was introduced to Nancy Carlisle, and they married on June 2, 1950. Arthur worked for B.F. Goodrich for several years. He was thrilled to open his own service station for the Gulf Oil Company in 1961, located at the corner of North Druid Hills Road and Lavista Road in Atlanta, GA. He later owned a Union 76 station located at the corner of Buford Highway and North Druid Hills Road. His wife, Nancy, always worked alongside him in his businesses. Arthur and Nancy retired in 1994.
Arthur, also known as “AC,” and affectionately known as “Bip” by those closest to him and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a devoted family man and wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed many beach vacations with his children and grandchildren and a special family cruise on Arthur and Nancy’s 50th wedding anniversary. Bip was known for being the wisdom-dispensing patriarch of the family who never judged and represented that safe person to whom anyone could always go for comfort and advice. He will be missed by many family members, business associates, and friends.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for Tuesday, January 30, at 3:00 p.m. at West Cobb Funeral Home with his son-in-law, Dennis Dewberry officiating. All are welcome to attend and commemorate a life well-lived by Arthur C. Couch. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
