Alton Bruce Abernathy, age 80, of Marietta Georgia passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2018. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta with the Rev. Tony Stallings presiding. Interment will be on Wednesday, September 19th at 1:00 pm at Yonah View Memorial Gardens in Cleveland, Georgia.
Alton was born August 15, 1938 in Haiwassee, Georgia to William Joel and Gillie (Palmer) Abernathy, the sixth of seven children. He left home at the age of 17 and came to Atlanta to work in the sign business. He continued to work in the sign and lighting business for over 50 years, was a member of the electrical union, IBEW Local 613 for over 60 years, and ran his own business, Abernathy Sign and Lighting Maintenance. He and his wife, Janice married on May 20, 1961. He was drafted into the Army later that year, during the Cuban Missle Crisis and proudly served his country for two years.
Alton was a member of Highest Praise Church of God in Austell. He was a well known Classic Street Rodder and loved going to car shows and cruise nights. He was well known for his great sense of humor, friendly outgoing personality, his love for his family and friends and he look forward to having breakfast every morning with his group of friends at Martin's restaurant.
Alton was preceeded in death by his parents, Joel and Gillie Abernathy, brother Ray Abernathy and sisters Katherine (Abernathy) Adams and Faye (Abernathy) Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Janice, of 57 years, daughter Laurie (Neal) Post, of Marietta, Georgia, son Adrian (Vanthan) Abernathy, of Marietta, Georgia, granddaughters Natalie (Steven) Sale, Caroline Abernathy, great-granddaughter Avery Sale, sisters Bertha McKinney, Mildred Vandiver, Grace Stover, sister-in-law Martha Abernathy and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 18th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
